Your new baby is here and before the little one changes right before your eyes, you know you want their tiny newness captured. The first 10 days are the ideal time to schedule a newborn session because of their sleepiness and because they still look like a newborn. Once your baby is born, I encourage you to email or call me right away so that we can schedule your time slot. After that is set up, here are some things to keep in mind so that your newborn sessions is enjoyable for you and baby, giving us the best photos possible!
Newborn sessions take 2 to 3 hours to complete and are set in my downtown Portland studio or outdoors in the warm months of Oregon. The studio is kept very warm at 75-80 degrees so that baby is comfortable and happy during the prop changes and positioning. I provide neutral props and backdrops and have many to choose from but I also encourage all my families to incorporate special items that are meaningful to you. This makes your session personal and unique, however, if you prefer not to bring items it is okay since I have plenty to choose from!
Please have your baby well fed before the session and be prepared to nurse or offer bottles during the session as well. As soon as you arrive, I will ask you to feed baby once more so that you and baby are both comfortable and relaxed. Our goal is to have a peaceful, sleeping baby for as much of the session as possible and as I mold them and situate them into adorable positions, they often need a little comfort and snuggle time with mama. If you are breastfeeding baby I recommend avoiding caffeine and foods that make baby have an upset tummy. This includes spicy foods and foods such as broccoli and brussel sprouts and other gassy foods.
I also suggest that you bring water and snacks for yourself. Three hours is a long time and you just had a baby and you need nourishment too! For your older children, a snack and a bribe work really well to encourage their best behavior and to get their cooperation during a time that is a big adjustment for them!
Please have lots of diapers, wipes, formula if bottle feeding, and a pacifier at our session. The pacifier is particularly helpful when babies just need a bit of comfort suckling to calm them down. I also recommend a change of top for you and if you are planning to have photos in a special outfit, plan on baby wearing a back up to start in case of accidents. Babies can be predictably unpredictable!
Congratulations on your new bundle; I can’t wait to snuggle!
